Our Story…
I Peter 2:5: “You also like living stones are being built into a spiritual house…”
I read this verse while sitting on a bench in Powderhorn Park in South Minneapolis in June of 2007. Finally we had the name of our new church. It fit and it was perfect, but I didn’t realize why it fit so well. God is saying that He is the one who builds up the church, cuts us each like stones in a quarry for a specific purpose, and then comes and fills the church with His Holy presence. While we have a new church and a new name, the groundwork for this ministry had begun long ago.
Not far from that bench thirteen years earlier, some of the foundational work for Living Stones was getting started. I remember walking up the hill from Powderhorn Lake with some of the original DinoMight hockey team after their first game. In 1995 I founded the DinoMights ministry, known locally also as “Hockey in the Hood”. DinoMights was started with a passion and commitment to befriend, mentor, and develop excellence in our urban youth from their elementary years through high school graduation. (For more of the DinoMights story see: http://www.dinomights.com/)
Out of this passion to develop community and family for the kids in our urban context, came a call to start a church. God began to build up a church made up of some of the youth, family, and extended family of mentors and coaches. Yet across the city and beyond He’s been carving and shaping other stones for a while to fit right in to the community at Living Stones. God is passionate about the business of drawing people to himself and the gift of community within the church. If you come join us you’ll hear our stories of the stones he is gathering to be “a church of all nations, revering God…reaching out to others…receiving divine love.”
